prepping tires for paint

Ok, my tires are really corroded and finally took the time to buy all the paint. I am going with silver again (like close to stock look) but it is the Subaru quick silver. Got the primer, paint, and clear coat. Will be spraying all the tires with an air compressor(no ****ty spray cans). The question is how much am I supposed to sand these things? Until the aluminum shows? or just till the original clear coat is sanded off. I also have a sand blaster but that thing is slooooow. Just wondering what the rims should look like when done. By the way I have spend 7 hrs on 2 rims so far.

he means the rims guys. Come on, give the guya break.

..Wait, did I just say that?

Ok, herku, you have to get the clear coat off of the rim, or the paint you go back with will fisheye and dimple very badly. Also, make sure before you spray that they are VERY clean and dust/moisture free. should be good to go. Let us know how it turns out.

I just painted my rims a couple days ago. Like Bio said, sand down the original paint (I used 220 to scuff it up good.) and reprimer. Wetsand that with 400 or higher and apply color coat. Don't sand that coat after applying it. If you mess up, you can sand it, but have to re-paint another coat. Then clear and let sit to dry a good day IMO. That's it.

The beauty of alunimun is that it's very soft. If you don't want the corrosion to come back, you must get rid of all of it. You can sand all of it out but it will take alot of work, and you will take out alot of good metal. I would blast them, it's the only way to get into the pores and get out all of the corrosion. As I said, you can sand them smooth, but it will never get everything and eventually it will blow out again.

Blast them until all the corrosion is gone and blow them off. As I said though it's going to be soft. Keep the blaster distant and move quickly if you are using sand. If you are using glass or media, you won't have to be so careful.

Sand them with 180 to get rid of the harsh texture from the blasting, be sure to ware gloves and DO NOT TOUCH THE BARE METAL WITH YOUR BARE HANDS. Alunimun is very easy to contaminate.

When they are semi smooth again, blow them off extremely well. DO NOT USE ANY PREP SOLVENT, it will get trapped inside the pores and never come out. You will be trapping solvents/moisture if you do, which will eventually lead to more corrosion. Just blow them off really good and spray your metal etch primer(or whatever you have for a bare metal primer).

Continue on with the fill primer and so on......

I actually thought he meant painting the letters on the manufacturer of the wheel, like back in the days where you’d see yellow and red on NITTO tires and on the sidewalls.

Haha ok ok yes I meant the rims, not tires. Getting all of the rims done is going to take me a few days anyways, so can I drive with the bare aluminum showing, or will this contaminate them also? Lots of good info I thank you for it. Also what if I put primer on the rims which have aluminum showing on them now, will this prevent corrosion?

If you have to drive it, just put a couple coats of etch primer on the bare spots to seal it off. You don't want them bare, or you will be making more work for yourself. Just make sure they are throughly cleaned after driving/before any work is done.

You know sometimes I wonder if I would make a new account and pretend to be a girl how everyone would be so helpful. Not to say you aren't already :). but im sure people would be more ready to give more info. To make you think even more that I was a girl I would post pics of my gf next to my gs-x. Haha what you guys think pretty brilliant isn't it
