98 Eclipse RS

Just bought a 98 RS, What Now?

Alright guys I just bought a 98 RS. I make decent money since im an assistant manager. I want to make my car the best of the best. I bought the RS becasue 1. Cheaper insurance and 2. i heard its 400 pounds lighter. Now i want to put work into this beautiful machine. I dont have thousands but i want to slowly work my way up. I want to end up with turbo. So like i said slowly work my way up.. start with making my engine stronger so it can handle some nice boost. So what should i do to my engine first? BTW it has 120,000 miles on it

Buy a spare engine and build it with stronger internals.

Maintenance!

I had to start with a GS too. Many people will tell you to do an engine swap to the 4g63t but i recomend you stick with the 420A. They are more dependable and accually stronger when it comes to higher boost. If you plan on turboing it in the future, i would start with forged internals (pistons, rods, crank shaft) this will put you ahead of the game when it comes time to turbo it. Stock internals on a 420a can only safely hold around 10 pounds of boost but with the forged internals its good for up to at least 25 or 30. Now doing these mods isnt really going to help horse power or torque untill after the turbo is on, but it makes more sence to do this than to spend hundreds on a cold air intake and all those kind of things that will be usless after the turbo. So stay strong with the 420a you wont regret it. Someone described the dreaded crank walk that 4g63 motors are so famouse for to me very detailed and that was all it took to change my mind about switching to one of those. I hope this helps you out man. O and make sure the timing belt is good before you do anything. Good luck

no one in their right mind will tell you to swap engines, swap cars. 4g63 in the gs/rs is an unbelieveable pain and just isnt worth it and hardly possible.

That is true.

My advice is to do as much research as you can, when you thing you are ready do some more. Slowly peice together a kit yourself, it will be much cheaper that way.

I would do 8 psi maximum.

Crankwalk is overrated and there's a fix. It's called 6 bolt.
