Rookie are you sure something is not blocking the oil return line from your turbo to pan? When I put my 16G I forgot the rubber plug on the return side of the turbo, but I had all the oil trying to drain and being plugged and I had so much smoke that my neighbors called the fire department. Not saying you did the same thing I did, but something is telling me that turbo might be having a hard time returning that oil to the pan.
Another thing too I noticed "off your pics" that would work for you is to replace the valve cover gasket and the gaskets that go around the spark plugs.

I will double check that... I don't remember dealing with any rubber plugs... but then again,.. the smoking I am dealing with is not that bad.. it is bad at times but very rarely. Either way, I think I found what my problem is. I still need to confirm it, but it seems to fit. To anyone that is dealing with blue smoke, of course do a compression test.. if your compression is ok,.. before I'd do a leakdown test, or blame the turbo, I'd pull off the exhaust manifold. It is easy to do, no dealing with undoing the scillicone gasket etc. etc. I did that, and there was oil in and on the mouth of the engine to exhaust manifold. The oil didn't seem burned either. Oil was leaking down from the engine into the manifold at the forth and second openings. I suspect my valve seals need to be replaced. I don't think it is the turbo. I will take the head off, replace the head gasket, timing belt, and replace as much as I can, now that I am already in there. That hopefully will fix my problem. And I know damn well how often I have been nagging you all about my issues. Just know, that I needed the car running desperately (had a lot to do with me being able to stay in the country legally). Either way. I think I can handle it on my own from this point on.. so thanks to all! Ryan, I will check on that the rubber plug... now you got me thinking... For anyone that is blowing blue smoke.. here is what I'd suggest... |

Dude if it took you all this to swap out a turbo i really REALLY don't think you should tackle this project on your own. BTW you don't HAVE to take the head off in order if to replace the seals. Like i said you should really get some help from someone local who can help you out. I do these kinds of jobs on the side (so i know from experience that its not easy at all) since my school schedule sucks enough that i can't hold a steady job =P.

Yes you're right. It isn't easy for a noob. I have read all about changing seals, the special tools required to do it with the head still on. And it "only" took me a few weeks to actually change my turbo. The rest of the time (almost a year), I was "kicked out" of the country, so I was left with a smoking engine. I just got back last month. I have opted to go for pulling off the head because I figured it is a good excuse to change the springs, retainers, valve stems, timing belt etc. etc. as my car is over 6 years old + 62K miles ( or at least check the condition). I am also considering increasing boost at some point, so a new head gasket with the ARP head stuts is a good idea. Doing it all myself is definitely hard, but I think if you own a car, it is a good idea you know how to fix it, as shops really get you on labour. Anyways, Good luck with the school crap man. Just hold on man, once it is over life is really good!!! |

I think you want to do it just because you want new shinny things under your hood. The head on my car has 130k+ on the stock springs/retainers and lifters with only the cams being different and everything still works great. The only thing i will say is if you decide to do this on your own please don't post a shopping list on here like every other day. There is plenty of information on how to do this online. Again it took you a few weeks to do a turbo swap so i can only imagine how long it will take to do the head. On a scale from 0-10 a turbo swap is a 2 and a head job is an 8. So find some local dsm guys who can give you a hand if you really want to do it yourself and good luck with setting your timing correctly as its a PIA if you've never done it (cake to me by now since i do it almost weekly =P).
