Question 16g upgrade

I am in the process of purchasing a 50 trim for my 2g eclipse. A friend of mine told me about a shop here in the houston area (turbochargers.com) that could build a turbo for me. I called them today and they informed me that they can either take my 16g turbo or buy a new one for $550 and rebuild it to make it a 18g or 20g turbo. The differnce they say is if I go 18g, I could still have a internal wastegate but If I go 20g I would have to go external. Has anyone heard of this shop before and does this sound like a good idea? I would probably end up buying a new turbo. By the way they also informed me that If I wanted to spool quicker (which is why I'm not sure of the 50trim, it spools around 3000 to 3500 RMP) I can add titanium fins I think is what it is and it would start to spool about 1700 RPM's. The price would be about $400.00 more for titanuim though and I'm pretty sure the cost is of 400 is to much just to spool about 700rpm quicker. The price they gave me to for a new 16g and make it into a 18g is about $750.00. I'm assuming the 20g would be the same price. They also quoted me if I went with a 20g they would weld on a flange on my manifold to accomodate a external wastegate for 40.00.

yes turbochargers.com is a good shop. Go 20g and you will have a "sleeper"/bastard 20g...all the looks of a 16g but with the punch of a 20g. very good for stock appearing class at the track or to fool opponents. you dont "need" an external gate, but if you wanna run more than 23psi you will need it.

They told me that if I go 20g I would "need" it to be external, somthing about the housing having to be bigger. I really dont know the tech terms on it but I was leaning towards the 18g because I wanted it to look as stock as possible but if it can go 20g and keep it internal, that would be ideal. The good thing is that if I buy a new turbo to have this done to, it would keep my eclipse down time to about 3 hours instead of a week while they build it. So if I tell them to keep it internal they could?? I am only planning on running 20psi max.

i'm not sure about how big thr flapper is on you're 16g but if you upgrade it and un-devide the housing that should be just good enouph to run a 20g @ 20PSI IMHO

I think the Bastard 20g style would be pretty nasty, and I'd go external gate if you can. No worries for boost creep and can probably hold more solid power to redline.

a few companies make internally gated 20g's. They are not recommended and most say they have really bad problems with creep.

Go 18g to stay internal
