Finally added my turbo water lines

Figured I'd start a thread to aid in peoples searches about making your own water lines for your DIY turbo kits.

I used 1/2" copper piping and fittings from Home Depot, 3/8" NPT female end fittings on the turbo side of the piping, 3/8" NPT-to-3/8" hose barb fittings (Home Depot as well) and banjo fittings on the turbo with 3/8" hose barbs which I purchased from atpturbo.com. The 1/2" tee fittings from home depot fit perfectly between the sections of piping for the heater core piping and didn't require any modifications.

You'll notice small bumps on the tee fittings, these are the ready-to-use tee fittings with a bump full of solder so all you need to do is heat it up. Heat up the tee fittings and remove all of the pre-installed solder from the two ends which will be inline with the heater core piping on the engine (just incase the cooling system is hot enough to liquify it). The reason it is great to use these is the bump on the outside is perfect for sealing the 5/8" heater hose

In the final pic you'll notice I used some heat shield wrap around the rubber hoses connecting to the turbo. I will be replacing this section of hose with 3/8" silicone hose to eliminate the worry of the hose melting from the extreme heat conditions. You'll also notice that I configured the lower piping so it hangs a little lower than it could have been, so it wouldn't interfere with my air filter.

Thanks man. Adding the water lines definitely taxes the stock cooling system. My suggestions to anyone who uses the stock system with the additional water lines would be to do one of the following:

1. Replace 195* thermostat with a 180* thermostat available at autozone

or

2. Wire drivers side cooling fan to the ignition so it stays on constantly when the car is running.

I don't suggest using a thermastat lower than 180* if you are using an automatic transmission because it will dip below 175* on occasion which the TCU still considers the engine/transmission to be "cold". This changes shift patterns (limits the tranny from exceeding 70mph in 3rd gear....bad if you 1/4 mile race) and also other engine parameters to a small degree.

Even using a 180* thermostat and wiring the fan to the ignition will dip the temp below 170-175*.

Good job Jamie, looks good. Haven't had to worry about any leaks? I have a water-cooled turbo that I have yet to hook up to the coolant lines and this looks like a nice solution.

Not a drop actually, and I did 6 or 7 very hard pulls with her today for some datalogging. This setup will get upgraded down the road, I'm sure. Its better than it was for now.

Pfft..........I'm here. How much more God-like can you get?

j/k. Good job with the lines though. Looks like that'll do until you think of something better. Now for God's sake, build a motor for that thing!

Hmm, I don't know but I think I recall reading it somewhere in a 4G63 section of some site. I just used a volt meter and saw which wire got 12+ when the fan activated. If you have 2 fans, you can just try wiring them BOTH to come on at the same time, rather than the passenger side fan only coming on when the A/C activates or the car REALLY starts to overheat.

lol, it all depends how long the stock engine lasts. If it lasts this entire season, this winter I will start collecting engine parts and find a reputable engine shop to do my machining
