1st gen talon
so i'm not sure where this question would go...but a guy in my area is selling a 1st gen talon turbo awd for $500 and he says he thinks it's problems are piston rings that need to be replaced and the turbo also needs to be replaced. Are these issues something a newb to engine work like me would be able to do with some help from a mechanic-savvy friend who is unfamiliar to this engine? Is this a good buy? Would it be better to use parts from it to put into my 2g? I'd hate to part it since it AWD though... what do you guys think?

Do a compression test on it. Start it and let it idle until it gets up to temp. Unless the piston rings are completely gone, the engine should still run. If he says it won't run, then there are likely other issues, but for $500, it's a good deal if the trans is good and the block has no holes in it.
Your best bet would be to find a completely built (as in assembled, not necessarily race built with upgraded internals) 4G63T and then swap it over. You could do that with your friend. |

sounds good to me if there's not big problems to worry about, good deal.

I would most definately say it is NOT an easy project to just pick up. Essetially you will be doing an engine rebuild. And if it gets to where you have to replace the piston rings and you have torn apart an old engine, you might as well do a rebuild with the labor hours already going into it. But that isn't just like changing the oil and plugs, you know?
If this is going to be your FIRST DSM turbo or you are learning the basics of car mechanics then I would really recommend picking up a full running car first because of the price you can get them for. Of course a shell for $500 is fine but by the time you get everything replaced, maintainance service and aligned then have about the same price except now you are over 15 hours of time you could have been already driving your car. Check on www.dsmtuners.com/classifieds and find yourself a clean 90-94 for a good affordable price. Shizt, I got my 1991 GS-T with 121K on it, GReddy Type S and recently rebuiltt 14B for $1500. Just the motor, fresh tires and mods make it worth that already nearly. I think that is the best route for you, less headaches and more fun. Think about it, just with basic performance modifications on the stock turbo, you can trap nearly 100mph! That's pretty damn fast for severe budget. Here are some good and cheap 1Gs to maybe start with (anyone asking 3K will take 2500): http://www.dsmtuners.com/classifieds...1&cat=2&page=7 http://www.dsmtuners.com/classifieds...&cat=2&page=12 http://www.dsmtuners.com/classifieds...&cat=2&page=13 http://www.dsmtuners.com/classifieds...1&cat=2&page=9 |

Myles, the third one is the one I was telling you about before and you told me its not worth it, it needs soem exterior work. You probably forgot about that. Also she lives in Florida but that list isnt a too bad of a start I guess. Anyways, PM me bro because I got back from the on-base doctor and it looks like I have an STD now which sucks! :(

500 for an AWD 1g is great, yes it will need work but if you have the time and money it will be a good time. 1g's needed a lot of maintance and most people never gave them what they needed hence most being kinda ****ty and unreliable. Give it some work and it will be great.
Sorry Dan about the STD its ok.
