Interior Restoration

Does anybody have any experience with repainting/restoring the vinyl in their interior, interms of dying, spray painting, fixing sun fade? I was poking around car domain and a saw a few interiors that were really nice, but some just removed their headliners and painted it just like that. I'm not one to take the short/cheap way without doing a bit of research behind it first. So i wanted to ask if any of you have done it and have some feedback on it.

To the OP: Some sun fade is to be expected, no matter what you do to your interior. If you are wanting the "Rice &Furious" look that so many cars have, you can spray it with Krylon, but if you want a decent looking interior, take your car to a shop that specializes in interior restoration or upholstery.

On a serious note, have your interior pieces dipped.

Im not sure how it looks, but I saw it today. Dupli-Color has a spray product for vinyl and plastic made especially for interiors, and it does come in our interior colors grey and black. Im not sure if it comes in tan, but Dupli-Color seems to make some pretty decent spray products like rim paint, trim paint, anodized paint and brake caliper paint kits. We have all seen how well the bronze rim paint turns out as well as the anodized paint which people have used on their valve covers, so who knows, maybe the vinyl and plastic spray is worth checking out. If you do, let us know how it turns out.

I was actually thinking about using that dupli color stuff but didnt know how well it would work. The carpet in mine was terrible when I got it. Ive shampooed it so many times and is still bad.

...or you could just go to a local fabric store and buy spray adhesion (glue) and get whatever material you want and do it the proper way. I'm doing my headliner and door inserts in suede this summer.

Do not do this FOR ANYTHING except your headliner. I would even advise against your door inserts. It is very hard to do and requires some skill to keep it sticking for more than a few months.

Now for fixing your seats you'll want to use a vinyl dye. If they are cracked then the cracks will still be there. Sorry. Only way to fix that is with new upholstery.

I Like the SEM line. I did my entire interior with it and it looks great and has held up EXTREMELY well. I daily drive my car it has yet to peal or fade anywhere.

The best part is that it will work on all of your plastic parts as well.

The secret is that you need to use their cleaner and clean everything really well.

Also this is not something I would call "cheap". I think I bought around 15 cans to do everything in my car at about $11 a piece. I looked up the price by the quart and it's the same so don't bother trying to spray it with a gun. Besides you shouldn't need a gun for seats.

I recommend taking everything out of your car so you can properly get into all of the edges and such. and avoid overspray.

Other tips are:
1) let the product cure fully. I let my panels and seats sit for 48 hours before I installed them back in the car. This makes sure that you don't mark them up on installation or with use.
2) Only paint if you have a heated garage, don't mind painting inside, or it is at least 70deg outside. This helps with the curing and makes sure that everything cures at a consistent temperature.
3) Warm the cans with a pot of warm water to help the paint loosen so you don't get any drips. I just let my sink get as hot as it can and soak it in that for about 15 minutes prior to painting.
4) Make your first coat SUPER light. This is called a "tack" coat. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then lay a nice "heavy" coat down. This helps with drips and runs. I think I had a total of 4 coats on everything. You should still be able to see the original color after the second coat but it should be faint. The third coat should be your heaviest and leave everything a consistent color. The fourth coat is mostly for corners and edges to make sure you got everything + a final misting to make sure the coat is consistent.
5) Wait about 10 minutes between coats.
6) when prepping make sure to get everything as clean as possible. After I use SEM's cleaning product I wash everything down with soap and water. Then I rinse heavily with water and dry it with a lint free towel. Always spray the same day that you clean. If you let things sit they will get dusty and you'll have to clean again before you paint.

SEM is sold at auto paint stores and some arts and craft stores.

To clean up the carpet, you wouldn't necessarily have to take it out to use the oxyclean stuff correct? I have a few places that are kinda hard to clean up but I don't really want to take out the whole carpet. And would oxyclean even work that well?
