Fuel problem maybe?

So it's been a month since the last time the car broke down (the guys at work keep track) and of course it started acting up today. I was driving and the CEL (which is always on) started flickering, then the battery light came on. I figured I had a loos plug to the alternator again as that has happened before. I checked it and it was fine. When I went to start the car again it would start then immediately stop. I figured I'd try jumping it and that did nothing. Then I thought I'd try giving it a little gas as I started it and it started, ran for about 30 seconds and died. Then I started it again while giving it gas and it ran fine. A couple of times it started without giving it gas but most of the times I had to give it gas to start it. When I was on the interstate and I got the RPMs up there to merge the car seemed like it was almost surging a little. It was very strange, I'm thinking some kind of a fuel problem with the car not getting enough? What do you guys think? What should I check?

You have any DTCs?

Check spark with a spark tester.

Check fuel pressure with a fuel pressure tester. You can hook it up right at the rail.

I don't know what a DTC is and I searched on it. The plugs and wires are all pretty much brand new, as for the spark and fuel pressure testers, are they very expensive?

Spark Tester = $8

Fuel Pressure Tester = $40

It could be a bigger pronlem with spark other than plugs/wires. ie: ignition coil.

If it's the ignition coil or plugs wouldn't the car not run at all? It runs fine once I get it started and at normal driving speeds just not when I gun it. As far as DTCs go, the CEL is always on because of some emissions stuff (that's what the mechanic told me anyway) so I really don't know if I have any new ones.
