AUTO Help.

Well I've been asking around alot and most of the things I'm finding are for the Auto Transmissions for the 4g63's. I'm looking to beef up my 420a Tranny. It's auto. I'm wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. I've check out http://www.importperformancetrans.com they only have about 2 things for the 420a's auto tranny. Most of it like I said is 4g63

Thanks for the help guys,

None, yet...

ummm. Well you have a chrysler engine, so check out the trannys for chrysler engines. Im sure all the neon stuff they sell there should match up. Your best bet is probably to email them about specific parts. They can help you alot better than any of we can.

the internals of the neon will work in the 420A The bell housing is really the only thing that would be different.

BEWARE
neon atx used the old 3 speeds mechanical tranny, born in the 80's and pretty much the same tranny seen on the Kcars 25 years ago !
in 2003 they switched to the 4 speeds BUT they used a cheaper 40te , an even weakier A604

if you have the cash and want a great tranny , swap yours for the the a604 of the Pt Cruiser Turbo, it's beefier, larger torque convertor and could stand close to 400 hp
I have one in my car, it's almost a direct bolt on job , you just have to swap a few parts from your old one and change 1 connector

You have an Avenger or do you have an Eclipse also? Would that still be a direct bolt up to my Eclipse?

Dodge Avenger/Chrysler Sebring with I4 engine = 100% same drivetrain and 90% same car all around as the Eclipse/Talon even the doors and swappable
except for the V6 Avenger/Sebring which has a mitsubishi v6 engine matched with the same chrysler a604 tranny

now this being said, yes the Pt Cruiser Turbo atx tranny is swappable into the eclipse/talon too

there are 2 versions of the Pt Cruiser Turbo, the high output one at 215-230 hp (depend of the years) and the Limited version at 180 HP
the Limited has a stock a604 same as yours
the high ouput has the stronger a604 and larger torque convertor that's the one you should be looking for

if you do the complete swap you will need to know that

A) get the starter of the Pt Cruiser Turbo High output if you intend to use the larger torque convertor too because the torque convertor doesn't fit on the 420a flexplate it needs the Pt Cruiser turbo flexplate, both flexplates have the same size and both will fit on the 420a engine, BUT the gears on the Pt Cruiser turbo flexplate are larger and don't fit properly with the 420a starter so do the whole swap starter/flexplate/torque convertor OR keep your starter, your flexplate and your old torque convertor

B) the 10 pin plug on the Pt Cruiser Turbo tranny is the newer larger style also found on 99 Eclipse you will need to swap the connector, it's an easy job the pin out is the same you need to cut and wired back pin for pin however finding the plug could be a nightmare so INSIST to get it from the junkyard when you will buy your tranny, many junkyard leave the harness on the engine and that plug is a part of the engine harness

C) they don't use the same engine mount but the holes are already there to put them, so just unbolt the pt cruiser turbo engine mount and put yours back on it, a big 5 minutes job :) you will also need to swap the little bracket where the shifter cable bolt too they are not the same another 5 minute job

D) last your need to use your old oil stick and on mine I had to drill a small hole and tap threads in it to bolt the stick the pt cruiser turbo oil stick doesn't bolt at the tranny but much higher on the engine so there are no hole for that and for the cross member engine mount the holes where there but not deep enought for my old bolts i just put a few washers to fill the space or you could get shorter bolts

overall that's a great upgrade shift 1-2 is very strong, 2-3 3-4 are ultra smooth I can't even feel them the gear ratios are the same too

sure it's a great tranny rebuilt and the price is about the same as non performance rebuilt

however you could also find good very low mileage tranny from the Pt Cruiser Turbo from $500-600 and up

and for your mtx did you search for neon tranny 2001 and up ? they are the same eclipse/talon with the hydraulic clutch (beware 2000 and - used cable clutch and the bellhousing will not be the same)
they also have a better for turbo 3.55 final ratio instead of 3.98

Thanks for the info, I'm really actually thinking about this swap now. I just want to rebuild the engine first, to prep it for turbo. Once that's done maybe I'll swap in one of these transmissions.

Yes I know all about the Mtx's but I have an auto so I have to find all the linkage and the ecu also with it. I am really considering the pt swap. Will it be more durable than the a604 I have?
