hard time shifting (auto)

I have been noticing on my 97 2g eclipse that when I first start my car in the morning, I have to let it warm up b4 I can go anywhere because it has a hard time shifting from 2 to third. Once the car warms up it doesnt have that problem anymore. Every once in a while when I'm coming to a stop, my transmission downs shifts really hard..(hope thats makes sence) I'm planing on taking it to a trans shop at the beginning of next week, but I was hoping for some input from u guys first.

Transmissions usually take longer to shift when the car is cold. Its a safety feature so that the transmission can warm up faster. Have you tried changing your fluid and filter?

I have changed the fluids and such... when it finally decides to shift, its at about 3500 to 4000 rpm 's... is that normal?

try this, when you start your car in the morning, be sure the parking brake is set, then drop it in neutral ...leave it there in N while it's warming up.
