How to: Install a SAFC in a 2g Turbo DSM

This writeup is for you wanting to add a SAFC to your 2g Turbo DSM. Some electrical knowledge is needed for this. This writeup is based off personal experience.

Parts needed:
SAFC
Butt Connectors

Tools needed:
Crimpers
Phillips head screwdriver
Wire cutters



Step 1: Getting Access to Factory ECU
The ECU is located behind the driver kick panel closest to the accelerator pedal. There are 2 screws and a clip that holds it on. Remove these screws. One is hidden by the cap which you have to remove.


The clip is on the other end. You can get the kick panel off by pulling the clip out on the other end. You can now maneuver the kick panel out of the car.

Step 2: Running Wires from the SAFC to the ECU
You might need to extend the wires for this install. I had to. If you have to do this, solder the wires. Should look something like this if you have to do this step.




I decided I wanted mine on top of my dash above my A/C vents. We need to remove the A/C vent bezel to mount it here. It is held on by 4 clips. Just pull on it and it will come out. Unplug the connectors on the back to get more access. The vents also come out if you need to but there is a ring terminal looking thing that goes over for the right flip switch for the vents which you have to take off but it's easy.


We want to run the wires down to the ECU. This isn't hard at all since you can see through the A/C vent hole to the floorboard of the driver's side.


Step 3: Installing the SAFC
This is the hardest step of them all. Since I had to extend my wires, the colors are a little different. Here's the wiring colors:

Twirl of Red/Black/Brown:
Red - SAFC 12v+ Power (Red)
Black - SAFC 12v- Ground (Black)
Brown - SAFC 12v- Ground (Brown)

Twirl of Green/Blue/Red/Black:
Green - SAFC RPM Signal (Green)
Blue - SAFC TPS Signal (Gray)
Red - SAFC MAF Input (Orange)
Black - SAFC MAF Output (Pink)

Here's a picture to help you thanks to turbosax2 at DSMtuners for the next steps:


We will go ahead and wire for the powering of the SAFC. We'll start with the twirl of red/black/brown wires. The power wire (Red - Red) will need to be tapped into the ECU at pin 25 on plug 1 (closest to bottom).


Next we will do the ground wires (Black - Black, Brown - Brown). These wires have priority of where they go. They both tap into pin 26 on plug 1 but the brown wire has to be closest to the ECU plug.


Now with that twirl done, lets start on the other twirl. Order does not matter here but we'll do things my way. We'll start with the RPM signal wire (Green - Green). This wire needs to be tapped into pin 58 on plug 3.


Next we will do the TPS signal wire (Blue - Grey). This wire needs to be tapped into pin 84 on plug 4.


Next is the MAF signal input and output wires (Red - Orange) (Black - Pink). Cut the MAF signal wire in half. This wire is located at pin 90 on plug 4. The black wire coming from the SAFC needs to go to the MAF signal wire closest to the ECU connector. The red wire coming from the SAFC needs to go to the MAF signal wire going to the MAF sensor. Look at the previous picture to see this.

Here's another picture to help you incase you need to confirm your connections:


Step 4: Mounting the SAFC
This step should be pretty easy. Get you some alcohol and a paper towel. Clean off the SAFC mount and the dash where you want to mount the SAFC. Preping this is key. Use some double stick tape to mount the SAFC mount to the dash and then mount the SAFC to the mount just like you did to the dash.


Turn the key on and see if you have power. If you do, go ahead and do the initial settings for the SAFC for your DSM. Go into the settings menu and set your NePoints to 1k, 2k, 3k, 4k, 4.5k, 5k, 6k, 7k. You can trade 4.5k for 5.5k if you want, depends on where you like your power. Now go into the etc menu and set Sensor Type to number 4 Karman, Car Select to 4 Cyl and Arrow pointing NE, and GRPH Scale to Cr: 30%.

You can now go ahead and start the car. I only have little experience with tuning so I will leave that up to you. To see if you RPM and TPS wires have been installed correctly, you can go to the monitor menu and watch to see if your RPMs register and TPS changes. You can tell if your MAF wires have been installed correctly by going to the setting menu and playing with the high or low throttles. If everything changes, you're done! If one of those three things aren't working, then you know you have a problem there.
