This is for you if you need to replace those worn down pads or warped rotors on your 2g DSM for the front. I performed this on my 1996 GSX which has dual piston calipers as opposed to single piston that the RS, GS, and GST have. This writeup is based on my personal experience.
Parts Needed:
Set of Front Rotors (AWD is different than FWD)
Set of Front Pads (AWD is different than FWD)
Anti-seize grease
Brake caliper pin grease
Tools Needed:
17mm socket and ratchet
Socket to take off whatever lug nuts you have
Hammer
Step 1: Removing Old Brakes
First thing you need to do is torque the lug nuts loose with the car on the ground. Depending on what lug nuts you have will differentiate which socket you use.
After you torque the lug nuts loose, jack the car up and put a jack stand under the car.
DO IT.
Take all the lug nuts off and remove the wheel.
Now you need to remove the caliper pin bolts. There is a guiding and a locking pin. The guiding pin is at the top of the caliper and the locking pin is at the bottom of the caliper. You need the 17mm socket and ratchet to remove these two bolts.
You are able to remove the caliper now.
Now you need to remove the caliper bracket bolts. You need the 17mm socket and ratchet to remove these two bolts as well.
You are able to remove the caliper bracket now.
You are able to remove the rotor now as well. If you have a problem removing the rotor, you can beat it off with a hammer.
Step 2: Installing New Brakes
Now that you have the old braking system off, it's time to put the new braking system on. First thing you need to do is put the rotor on.
Next thing to do is to mount the caliper bracket back on. Use anti-seize on the two bolts. You need the 17mm socket and ratchet to install the bolts back on.
Now you need to set the pads in the caliper bracket. Put caliper pin grease on the backsides of the pad.
Now you can install the caliper back onto the pads. You will have to compress the pistons in the caliper to put it back on. I ate my spinach this morning so I was able to do this with my hands.
Next is to install the caliper pin bolts back onto the backside of the caliper. Be sure to lube the caliper pin bolts with the caliper pin grease and put anti-seize on the threaded part of the bolt.
Now with the braking assembly installed, you can put the wheel back on with the lug nuts.
BE SURE TO DO BOTH SIDES AT THE SAME TIME BEFORE DRIVING
Lower the car, retighten the lug nuts, pump the brake pedal a few times to compress the caliper pistons onto the brake pads, take it for a test drive, if brakes are good, then congratulations, you just installed a set of new front brakes :)
