suggestions on spoiler?

I'm thinking about getting an APR GTC 200 drag spoiler for my new 2g gsx that I just bought. It's a carbon fiber drag wing and I became very interested because it has actually been proven to help fight drag on your car (it's not just another inaffective ricer wing). Plus, I'm about to drop a GT32 71mm turbo in my car which pulls about 520 horses so I need something that will help prevent drag. I'll post pics on my progress with the turbo and the other performance parts I'll need to put in so my car can handle that much power (the list is pretty long), but at the moment I'm just looking for feedback on the wing.

It seems to me that a spoiler can't reduce drag, only make more of it. It just seems like any spoiler gets in the way of airflow and adds weight.

In my opinion, it looks ugly to me, and a bit ricey. I would recommend keeping the stock spoiler.

(Edited to make less asshole-ish.)

This is not true, yes weight is added, but it can also be lost in other places on the car. The wing changes the way that the air flows over the car and CAN in fact reduce the drag on the car. If you want to PM me I'll get more technical for you.

Unless the wing throws off the front/rear weight balance so much that air flows over the car in a different way, how can it reduce drag? Maybe it reduces drag over having a stock spoiler, but air is going to hit the front of the car no matter what's behind it.

Drag does not just involve the front of the car. Drag is measured over the entire surface area of an object. The better the air flows over the ENTIRE surface area the less drag there is. If you change the way the air flows off the back of the car it actually changes the air flow direction of the rest of the car. This does not involve weight at all, it involves another surface area.

A spoiler creates more use of the the air pressure around a car. Depending on the angle it can either help lift the back end (lowering the front) or put more pressure on the back end, raising the front. This is overly simplified of course.

F1 cars are the best example of applied aerodynamics that I can think of. They are shaped the way they are for a reason. I was told one time that at 200mph they have enough downforce to drive upside down and not fall off the ceiling. This of course has never been tested but it gives you a good Idea.

Another example is the Mustang cobra. Not this generation but the 2000-2002. The Wing on that not only looks better but when combined with the changes to the front and rear bumper the downforce is increased by 6x the stock mustang. What this does is increases handling at top speeds with the sacrifice of a few mph on the top end (I believe they lost 3mph). So spoilers do add something. Whether or not the addition is beneficial depends on the spoiler and the car.

I also heard that 2g's gain absolutely nothing from a spoiler and the best bet is wingless haha

Just because you are throwing in a turbo that can produce 520hp doesnt mean you need a new spoiler. ( I hope you have all the supporting mods for that turbo ) Stick with a 2gb or wingless IMO.

^ exactly... Just like the Evo and the vortex generator... in "theory", yea, wonderful... in actuality, waste of plastic...

Go wingless and use the money you saved for performance.
