Rust proofing

Just wondering what everyone is using for rust proofing? I know I want something oil based and non of that hardening stuff that traps water

For my engine bay I ground down all the rust spots to bare metal and then sprayed metal etching primer on to it, then black over it and it looks good as new. For the wheel wells I used some 3M rubberized coating paint (what people use for their truck beds) and also used it for the spare tire well and the area around that. Did that the beginning of the summer and looks good so far.

Im planning on lifting up the whole car and rust proofing everything. I do sometimes take my car to college during the winter even though I really hate to do it and would be a shame if it started to rust. I'm less worried about the engine bay but yeah wheel wells and the underside of the car is what I am more concerned about. Thank you bosox for the info but I personally don't want anything that hardens in case it traps water.

I really wouldn't be too worried about it, the rubberized coating shouldn't trap water unless you do way too thick of a coat. Cars come from the factory with a coating like that on it. Don't worry too much, I'm in New England so I do know what you are worried about.

Truthfully, the best/cheapest rustproofing I have found is used motor oil, but you don't want to spray it all over the underside of the car. For the underside, you want something rubberized, and as long as it's clean and dry, you shouldn't be trapping moisture. But for the inner panels, I would use oil(ie: inner rockers, inner frame rails, inside of doors, pretty much anything unexposed). Take door panels of and squrit it into all the seams and leave them open with some cardboard under them till they drain. Yes, they're going to drule a little, you'll probebly have to wipe them down weekly, but trust me, it works.

I'd do the rubberized stuff first and let it harden, it won't stick to oil.

A buddy of mine does auto accesories and they have been doing some peoples cars with the spray in bed liner. That might be a way to go, but would cost a little more than regular undercoating.

Yes used motor oil does work but contains sulfur. Sulfur is known to cause corrosion in metals. You can get some cheap motor oil so why use the used oil? I looked through the garage and found this chain saw chain oil. Now this stuff is sticky as hell I'm thinking it could be good stuff to use. Let me know what you think bout that idea.

Yes from personal experience I have had with cops can't say that I have been happy to be around any of them. Even though two nighs ago I sat on my porch eating doritos while my neighbors little 9th grade party was getting busted. Was a good time looking at little 9th graders run for their lives. Still felt bad for them though.

Sure, bar lube should work great. The point is that you want something that continues to move around. The oil will never hardend and will always be flowing into the seams. I've never had a problem with the used stuff, but if you want new go for it. The thicker the better, it will just take longer to drain. I've got one of those old fashion oil squirter thingies, it shoots a stream like 10 feet, great for getting into all those hard to get spots.

I've also cut rubberized undercoating with oil 50/50. It give the oil alittle better sticking power to topsides of framerails(oil alone will thin out on top due to gravity). It just helps to keep the rustproofing where you put it, but at the same time, lets it flow into all the cracks and crevices. It will never harden so I wouldn't recommend it for the exposed areas.

i don't know about you american folks but in canada we have tons of shops that do ONLY rust proofing. For the last 15 years i've been taking my volvo to KROWN RUST CONTROL -Corrosion Control For all types of vehicles, and still ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY!

I have no rust and i took my eclipse there last Fall. However, i heard there is an even better place now. The new places uses a very thick application of oil... so it doesn't get washed away by all the water in the winter. I'll find out the exact name. But you guys are better off going to one of these kinda places. I only paid 80 bucks last year to get it done.

If british car owners swear by it, then it must be good...

hurrah for always living in places where rust is not a problem... like the South and arid Southwest.
