License Plate Relocation?
Getting ready to put my Apexi FMIC in.
I just LOVE this look:
The look that has the black plastic thing removed from the center, you know? Especially with the FMIC getting installed, more airflow = good thing.
But to get that look, I have to take off the license plate. And to do that, the licence plate bracket has to come off, too...
I'd like to move it to somewhere else rather than the stock location... and NOT on the dash.
Suggestions? I looked through the 20 pages of pictures on DSMtalk and nothing tangible is there... (sigh).
I'm leaning towards putting it on the side somewhere.. without covering the headlight or the foglight, of course.

I just took mine off completely. Even though the law says you have to have the front plate, I've never had any problems with the police. Not to mention the 10+ cars I see every day that only have the rear plate on.

Same in my area, too... cops don't really care if you have the plate on the bumper or not. But then I hear stories of fines and tickets, and etc. I figure, if and when a cop stops me, it's going to be just another item on his list.
Plus, doesn't having the plate on the dashboard just scream, "STOP ME!"? :0) That's why I didn't want to put it there.
Even tuners don't have enough information. I'm thinking of getting a license plate bracket (I'm looking on eBay now) and modding it somehow to attach to the air dam blocking piece on the driver's side...
you know, that grey colored piece. Hmm...

The only option I've seen that isnt in the stock location, is someone took an evo front LP bracket, and sanded the top lip a small amount to contour the body. I guess its an option, and a really close fit to begin with
Oregon and Washington both require front plates... Screw that... 3 dsm's, and I was only hastled once in WA, because the cop thought I was attempting to ditch him by pulling into an IHOP at 6:30am, so he pulled out the LP excuse. I was going to breakfast, told him there were no spot for it (no holes drilled from the factory :D), and that was that. However, I've heard some beyond rediculous stories come from California.
So, evo bracket. yeah
edit, only time I was hastled, the plate was in the corner of the dash. It DOES scream pull me over. Took it out, and its under the passenger floormat on both the spyder and gsx

Currently reading "painting your FMIC black" on tuners.

I ran without a plate for a year and a half without being pulled over. Then I stopped at a stop sign with a bike cop in front of me and a cop to my left.
He was bored and pulled me over.
Then a month later i was doing 64 in a 45 and he gave me a fix it ticket for the plate even though it was in the dashboard. So i just put it back on.

I think I might have something.
You all know that one bolt that's a bitch to get to when taking off the oem headlights? What if a bracket can be fabbed to make use of that? Hmm....
Short arm attached to the headlight hole and goes up, bend 90`, a THIN long arm that goes over the bumper cover, beneath the headlights, bend 90`, then a short arm with a perpendicular bracket that will hold the plate... Let me see if I can draw it up. Hmm... HMM!!!! :0)

My friend took the license plate and bent it a little bit into an arc. It fit up against the driver's side of the bumper and he just drilled screws directly into the bumper. That's the quick and easy wasy I guess. It worked though. lol But I do like the EVO Bracket idea, I had been kicking that around for a while I"ll probably go with that.

Drilling holes to the bumper may not be a bad idea... as long as I put some rubber grommets in those holes and have something behind the cover th hold it all up.
If this thing fails, and the Evo thin doesn't workout, I'm going that route. :0)
EDIT: wait... I just realied the error of my design.. you'll be able to SEE the thin long piece sticking out underneath the headlight... DAMN! <:0)
Hmm...
EDIT2: maybe something from the fog light hole... shave away a little slit on the foglight plastic piece and do it from there? flip the design up-side down? Hmm...

Put it on a swivel so it comes up at 25mph
Really there is not much you are going to do that will make it look different short of removing it completely. If you "move" it, you will completely lose the flow and cutting out the black **** and moving your plate would of been worthless in the first place.

What I do. I take the plate and bracket off of the car. I then bend it to make it look as is if plate was hit by another car. I then keep in in the car under the seat. I just say the car was hit while parked, the bracket is on some sort of special order from the dealer.
I havent had a problem with that yet.

Man guys, sucks that you have to worry about this so much, in Oklahoma only the rear license plate is required, new cars sold here don't even have a bracket or holes in the front bumper to mount a plate

I mean, it's not too bad in the OC... even in LB. When you venture into the LA area, this becomes a problem. They will write a ticket if they see a parked car without the front plate, let alone on the road. I've gotten plenty of those w/ my Saturn I used to have.
I'm thinking of a flip design... a linear actuator and a cable wire... hooked up to a 12v source and a switch... Hmm...
It's just hard to find a *cheap* 12v linear actuator... anyone got one lying around? :0)
