Sub hook up?
I just got 2 jl 12" subs, and a sony 1200 watt amp. Can I wire them to the stock cd player? It is the stock cd/casette combo.

yes you can as long as you have a converter stereo line out put which will take your rear speaker wires and turn them into rca.

I'll mail you one if you pay shipping. I bought it in an attempt to use it with my stock Volkswagen CD player, but then decided I wanted a Line in.
PM me if you want it.

Would it work just as good as putting in a head unit?

A HU is going to give you other features such as Hi/low filters (tells your amps what notes to amplify), Faders/ FBLR , Possibly a cleaner sound, graphic EQ, Levels for your amps, and the ability to play other types of media (Ipod, MP3, DVD).
I personally think it's worth it. Will it make your music sound better? Maybe a little.

Most head units also have subwoofer controls that allow you to change the volume level of the sub, as well as turn it off. Comes in handy if you are cruising through a town were the cops hate loud music.....

Let me redo this:

If it's a higher end head unit it will and hi/low filters don't tell the amplifier what "notes" to amplify. You set the filter at a certain frequency (we'll use HPF for this example) such as 90 Hz. The sound curve will be a straight line across the graph at the desired dB level (we'll say +6) on the right side until it hits 90 Hz then it starts to drop off (decreasing volume/dB so +6 will eventually drop to -12) depending on what octave crossover it is (12 dB, 24 dB, 48 dB, etc. The octave depends on how extreme the slope of the dropoff is). A LPF is the same way except starts off on the left side until it hits 90 Hz (we set the LPF at 90 Hz as well) and starts to drop off depending on what octave crossover it is. If you are confused about this entire principle, I can draw you a picture.

Fader/Balance. Every other head unit has this feature, even in your grandmother's 90 Buick Delta 88.

Yes a cleaner sound. More wattage per channel.

You will spend at least $250 for a head unit with a built in EQ.

Subwoofer control, not amplifier control.

Finally one I don't have to comment on

Yes, it will make everything better. A head unit is like an engine. Your subs/amplifiers may be bad as hell (turbo/fuel system) but if the head unit (engine)isn't a good one, you won't be able to utilize the greatness of the other components (turbo/fuel system) so you will lose sound/bass/clarity/loudness (horsepower) because your main component that runs everything (head unit/engine) is the weak link.
Now I am done.

Graphic? well, probably not but my Pioneer headunit has a pretty good equalization setup, I believe i get to set the center frequency for low, mid, and high boost/cut, as well as how the curve functions. I want to say semi-parametric but I could be wrong. 139 at sonic electronix, more everywhere else. Has front/rear/subs/ at 4V, controls subwoofer outs what frequency is centered, Normal, Reverse phase or off. I think a graphic is a waste personally, you end up spending so much time from song to song adjusting that it just isn't worth it, As a bass player, 3 or 5 band is seriously enough.

Like I said before, I was just going to Hi/Lo convert my stock head unit, but I wanted ability to have an Aux in, so an aftermarket head unit was for me. But again, if you want to keep the stock deck in there, let me know, I'll ship you the converter.

Always better to upgrade head unit. I paid $1100 for the past 2 head units I've had.
