door speakers

so my speaker size is 6.5" capable. what is the mounting depth. I'm thinking about moding the front door to fit an 8" sub in it (assuming that the mounting depth on the 8" is able to fit). I know i would have to modify the bracket, but i dont know if it would be able to be done and look stock.

anyone have any thoughts/ideas on this? its just a thought i had and i wanted to know what others thought about it.

1998 gs spyder (heading towards gsx :-) )

also, i'm making a computer to be my audio system (just a small low power computer. mini board n such). its going to have a 7" touchscreen, which will run on linux. It will have the ability to play videogames, movies, music n such. I'm also thinking about modifying the ignition to run from that (enter a code to start the car. lol)
It will also have wifi. The audio part of it wouldnt be hard. 4.1 surround sound. pdx5 amp) and it will be able to sync with my pc at my house (mabye be able to do this through the internet, but thats setting it up for server capabilities at home). Hardest part would be the gui. what do you think about this also :-) (7" touch screen would be removable and fit in the stock position for the head unit)

sorry its its a bit long, i'm not the greatest at writing

Most of the people you will find here are purists, meaning that we care about making sure the cars remain beautifully stock with a few minor tweaks that make the cars our own. That being said, I am not sure how many people will give you positive feedback on what you are attempting to do. Other then that I will try and answer your questions to the best of my knowledge.

The front side and backside speakers I believe only have a 3 to 4 inch clearance. When I replaced my factory ones with JVC 6x6's and 6x9's there wasn't much in the way of room to spare. But if you are going to custom build a fiberglass enclosure, you might have enough room to pop the panel forward about 4 more inches to be able to mouth subs there. Personally, I wouldn't because a pair of tens or twelves in a custom box in the back will make more sound then you need in our cars. That being said, you own a spider, so trunk space is at a premium, and fitting a pair of twelves will likely be an issue as well.

So if you want to remove your rear speakers for subs, its possible (with alot of work). But you will lose quite abit of the treble in the process. The stock front speakers are weak and can cause some issues for you in the way of sound quality.

As for everything else you want to put into your car...if you want to go that route more power to you, but in my logic, these cars already have enough that go wrong with them, why add things that might drain your battery, cause wiring issues, or all together cause your care to take a crap on you.

Do what you want man, and gods speed, I hope everything works out well for you.

Well, the car computer is a definate, and the 8" in the front was just an idea i thought up, and wwondered if anyone had even thoguht about it. I'm a very big computer nerd, and i wanted to do the carpc before i got my eclipse. That will be pretty easy to do, and wont break that much, since it will just completly replace my sound system. And on the removing the backseats for the subs, i was planning on a 12" where the back seat was, and making a mounting for the 6x9's on it also. That is a long way in coming though.

i'm probably not going to do anything to the front speakers though.

Why do you need a sub in the doors? Doors aren't really all that great enclosures for boxes considering the leaks around the door panels (on a used car definately). I would get components for the front.

thats what i'm planning on doing, i just was curious to if it was possible. it would be interesting if it worked. but it would have to have a very small mounting depth for the sub

It's about 3.5inches. Also the sub is going to smack into the inner door or the plastic cover piece (the interior part of the door) You won't be able to make it stock. Just doo some fiberglassing and make some door pods.
