Head unit question
i installed a Kenwood KDC-138 with a built in MOSFET amplifier (22 watts RMS/50 peak x 4 channels)
i have the stock speakers still in and it sounds really clear and powerful but i was wondering if the built in amp is any good and if i buy aftermarket speakers would it be even louder?(there is no bass barely with the stock speakers)
my friend has an 02 eclipse and hooked the stock amp up to the Boss Audio speakers and it has awesome bass to it.
would Boss speakers do that with the built in Amp that this Kenwood head unit has?
and also, it has a connection for 2 subs but i dont think this built in amp will power 2 subs, am i correct on that one or will it be ok?

Well, probably not. Stock headunit wont push a sub at all, like it will but 22 watts will do nothing for your case. Even if you can bridge it to a whopping 44 watts it still wont give you good sub, hell if you bridged the whole damn thing to 88 watts it still wouldnt have that good of bass for a sub woofer. They need alot of wattage to really push, so get yourself either a Mono sub amp thats quality and can put out some power, or and this i think is the best option, get a 5 channel amp to power your speakers and a subwoofer.

Those sub hook ups are probably pre-amp hook ups meaning the internal amp doesn't affect those wires so they wont run subs. You can't even connect them straight to subs those wires are to hook up to an amp. About the speakers I would get a 4 channel amp to run the speakers and a separate amp to run the subs if you get them. I'm pretty sure that would be the best way to go but I'm not sure. I'm sure bassman will come in soon and let you know what your best options are.

Don't get boss speakers they are really crappy, get Boston Acoustics, Phoenix Gold, Infinity Reference or Kappas to name a few good brands.

There is a huge difference between the amp that is built in to the head unit and the factory mitsubishi amps. If you put a higher grade speaker like Boston Acoustic or Infinity Kappa you would need to have an aftermarket amplifier to get a decent sound out of them. If you just want a decent set of speakers with some bass, and you want to run them off the head unit, look into some Alpine Type-S or Infinity Reference.

i had boss in my 2000 eclica. they were clear sounding but that was it.
i found out that my friend took out all the Boss speakers in his eclipse and put the stock speakers back in. thats why it has better bass.
but i my uncle is giving me his audiobahn 8" bazooka tube. im just gonna use that as my bass.
thanks guys

I have the phoenix gold RSD's and while they sound good you'll need to trim the inside of the door panel because they hit it when you bump the music real loud.

OK man.
You also want to check and see if you have a factory infinity amplified system. Which means there will be a seperate amplifier for your speakers other than the factory headunit. If you hook up the kenwood and your speakers are good and you have a amped factory system then you will fry some stuff. Second off no offense man, but if you can't hook it up right the
first time then take it to someone else who can, watch and learn. It suckes rewiring stuff.
But hey good luck.
PS. for that headunit and the power it puts out I would just go with some
xplodes or pioneers or hey kenwood speakers for your mids and highs

When you install an aftermarket radio it will bypass the factory amplifier by itself (If it still plays no problem without having to bypass the amplifier. I personally have never had to go from stock to aftermarket radio in a 2g eclipse but I have a 3g eclipse and I had to rewire/bypass the factory amplifier.) meaning that the aftermarket MOSFET IC chip (yes, it's a chip about 1 1/2 inch by 3/4 inch soldered inside the radio) will be the output for your speakers instead of the factory amplifier.
Boss is a good cheap brand. If you're wanting good sound/volume, go with something more expensive such as memphis/rockford fosgate/alpine. If you upgrade from stock to aftermarket with a higher brand, yes you will notice a difference, especially the higher frequencies, and lower as well considering the stock speakers are at least 9 years old. I'm currently running a JVC NX5000 Navi/DVD/HDD/etc..etc.. head unit with memphis power reference 6.5" components for the front and memphis power reference 6x9s in the back and they are pretty loud.

alright. i think the guy who had the car before me changed out the stock speakers. there were 2 old speakers sitting in the trunk!
but i dont have alot of money to shell out. they toldme at a local audio place to rewire stuff is 80 bucks. even after i ripped out the whole dash and panels.....
anyway... im just gonna put in this audiobahn tube in and be done with it. spend more money on the engine and looks!
thanks all
